(More customer reviews)We can most likely all agree that winter coats from our times past had a tendency to be cumbersome and heavy. On top of that, they left me with quite a bit of ground to make up on the road to "style icon" status when I was growing up in Rochester, New York. The Flex down jacket by Sierra Designs is an excellent combination of style, warmth, durability and lightweight design.
The first thing that came to mind when I first opened the box was, "Oooh, I love the color!". For the record, the jacket I have has a black outer shell with a sangria colored liner...minus the fun wine soaked fruit part.
The liner on the Flex down jacket is amazingly soft and supple even on bare arms. The outer shell is not one of those puffy jackets that conjures up images of the Michelin Man but rather offers just enough volume to be current and stylish. The fit throughout the body is quite slimming without being constrictive in any way. Even the adjustable hood does a good job of keeping the cold prone parts of your head (such as your nose and forehead) nice and cozy while offering a ton of visibility.
As for function, the Flex(tm) technology gives amazing range of motion throughout the body and especially in the arms. In fact, I even tried on my baby carrier (with baby) and felt no different than without the jacket on, with the exception of getting a bit too hot since I was indoors at the time. There are three interior pockets, one of which is zippered and has a hole for a headphone cord to run as well as a corresponding guide loop higher on the jackets interior. There are two zippered exterior pockets with the left hand pocket having another internal, velcro close cell phone pocket.
Since it is only now beginning to get cooler here in the great Northeast I've not been able to truly put the Flex jacket through it's paces outdoors yet. However there will be an update to this review as soon as possible but something tells me that the 750 fill down and all the heat retaining features of this jacket will have no problem with whatever old man winter can throw at it.
