(More customer reviews)It's been getting harder and harder over the past few years to find a good looking, classic windbreaker in my local stores. The ones they carry now are way too sport-ish, or made of strange fabrics with weird looks, or have very large, non-subtle logos that serve as free advertising for the manufacturer, for my tastes. Obviously I'm no longer hip. :-) So even though I prefer to buy coats and jackets only after seeing them in person, I was almost forced to start looking here on Amazon for a replacement windbreaker, and found Port Authority's "Classic Poplin Jacket".
The windbreaker's outer shell is made of a polyester-cotton blend, and is a bit stiff to the touch, which is normal for jackets that are water resistant. There is polyester mesh lining and 6-inch zippered pocket inside the jacket, and the sleeves are nylon lined. What looks like a center vent in the front of the jacket (in the manufacturer's product picture) is not a vent, but is decorative only. The pockets are deep and properly made so that things shouldn't accidentally fall out of them. Both the waist and sleeves have elastic banding. The zipper is a bit on the thin side, but I haven't had any problems so far. Overall, I find this to be a comfortable, well, constructed, attractive windbreaker.
Two notes ... first, if you order a two-tone jacket, such as Dark Navy/Red, or Black/Stone, the outside of the jacket is one color, while the entire inside of the jacket is the other (not just the collar). So, you will be showing the inside color when you fold the collar down and when you leave the jacket half zippered. I like the look, but you may not, so just be aware if you order one with two colors. The other thing is that the collar has a drawcord and toggles instead of a button or a snap. Since this jacket does not come with a hood, it's more decorative than useful, and I would have preferred a simple snap or button to secure the collar if I want to fold it up all the way. Since I don't intend to wear my collar this way, this is just a very minor annoyance to me rather than a problem.
I really like this jacket and have ordered a second one. It's fairly inexpensive and costs less than half of the other windbreaker that I liked here on Amazon. I don't usually write this long of a review for a clothing item, but this is a good buy, and if you want a classically good looking, well designed, fair-priced windbreaker, this is the one to get. Five stars.
